What is the difference between an HDMI 1.3 cable and HDMI 1.3a, or 1.3b cables?

For most customers, there is no difference at all between a HDMI version 1.3 cable and HDMI version 1.3a and 1.3b cables. The difference between cables lies in how they have been tested and to what specification but this holds no actual practical difference for 99% of consumers because they do not impact on domestic functionality or use.
There are plans afoot to reduce confusion in the market-place for consumers regarding this by changing focusing less on categorisation as it currently stands and instead defining HDMI cables by product features and functionality.
