What is HDMI 1.4?

HDMI leads are far and away the best choice of connection for the latest home gadgets, they are easy to use and have the capability to display High Definition pictures and transmit digital quality sound all in one cable. HDMI leads are used to connect PCs, laptops, DVD players and games consoles to all kinds of modern TVs like LCD and Plasma screens.

You may have heard of HDMI 1.4 which is the latest incarnation of HDMI technology. HDMI 1.4 was released in 2009 and increases the maximum resolution of its image to 4096 x 2160p. This puts HDMI 1.4 on a par with the digital films shown at cinemas. Like standard HDMI cables, HDMI 1.4 has 19 individual channels allowing it to transmit high volumes of data at high speeds but HDMI 1.4 also has an extra Ethernet Channel within the cable.  HDMI 1.4′s Ethernet channel allows for 100 Mb/s connection between two HDMI 1.4 enabled devices, this makes it possible for you to use one remote for two devices for example because HDMI 1.4 doesn’t just connect devices, it synchronises them.

Many consumers enjoy High Definition content already, but technology, like HDMI 1.4 moves very quickly indeed. In time, 3D content will become popular in the home and HDMI 1.4 will become the benchmark standard for 3D.

You can buy HDMI 1.4 cables right now for a few pounds online and they can be delivered within 24 hours too, that’s almost as quick as the super-speedy HDMI 1.4 itself.  All HDMI 1.4 cables are backwards compatible so you don’t have to worry about it being ‘too’ high tech for your equipment. If you have HDMI leads already, consider making the upgrade to HDMI 1.4.
