HDMI cables are now used for a high-quality multimedia experience when connected to audio visual sources. These sources include HDTVs, Blu-ray players, PlayStation and other gaming devices. HDMI 1.4 is the latest version of HDMI. Unlike its predecessors, HDMI 1.4 offers massive improvements in areas like resolution, network capability and automotive connection.
The four new features of HDMI 1.4
Audio return channel:
HDMI 1.4 offers a completely new audio return channel. As the audio and video signals are carried via a single cable, it reduces the need of having a number of different cables.
HDMI Ethernet Channel:
The latest version of HDMI cable adds a data channel. This also helps to ensure a rise in bi-directional communication speed. Additionally, this data channel makes devices instantly ready for Internet Protocol-based applications. HDMI 1.4 also allows the ability to share an internet connection with other HDMI devices. Thus, the need to have a separate cable is completely eliminated.
Supports higher resolutions:
The HDMI 1.4 specification allows users to play high resolution files (up to 4k x 2k). It also allows HDMI devices to offer the required support for transmitting content at a resolution that is similar to most digital cinemas.
3D resolution and common format:
HDMI 1.4 standardises the I/O portion of the system. So, in case there is any problem in playing different 3D formats, HDMI 1.4 cables can take care of it. Moreover, the resolution is specially defined to allow high-definition devices to play files with dual stream. Resolutions of up to 1080p are supported by HDMI 1.4 cables.
